The story
Built for a Boston lawyer in 1902
Francis B. Greene, a lawyer and the son of a New Bedford whaling merchant, asked Peabody & Stearns, architects of Boston's Custom House Tower, for a country house at the high point of his 80-acre estate. He spent eight months of the year here and the rest on Beacon Street.
The original plans and elevations are held in the Boston Public Library's Peabody and Stearns collection, and the house is featured in Annie Robinson's Peabody & Stearns: Country Houses and Seaside Cottages (Norton, 2010). From 1934 it was home to the Congregation of Holy Cross for eighty years.
